Here are some guiding questions for ayats 10-19 Surah Luqman, we hope this is helpful, inshallah:

A10. Scientific and visual reminders:

  • What makes you in awe of Allah about His creation?
  • Where would you like to go to observe more of His signs?
  • What can you see in yourself that makes you in awe of Allah?
  • Signs are everywhere. Having observed these signs can you deny them?
  • After observation what causes you to obey Allah?
  • Ask yourself what causes you to disobey Him?
  • How can you obey Him more?

A11. Allah’s Rhetorical question.

  • How do you feel about Allah’s rhetorical question?
  • Are we not dumbfounded?
  • How does then idol worshipping and those who worship and set partners with Him make you feel?

A12. Allah SWT tells us about LuQman.

  • Wisdom is different from someone who simply has knowledge. What is the difference?
  • Allah mentions gratitude with knowledge, this is very key. When practicing regular gratitude how does this make you feel? How can you practice gratitude more? Compare these on the days when you are less grateful - notice both moods.
  • Though Allah is not in need of our gratitude but our gratitude towards Him helps us. How?

A13. Shirkh

  • There are various debates whether LuQman was a prophet or not, but notice the order of his advice to his son.
  • This is the worst sin why? You can correlate to your findings in your answers to Ayats 10&11

A14. Kindness to parents

  • Ask yourself how have you treated your parents?
  • If they have departed how are you treating them? Allah will question all of us about this.
  • Make special efforts with your parents even if they are not Muslim (unless they force you do something against Allah) how will you do this? (Be humble towards them and never mistreat them)
  • The reason we honour parents is particularly to do with the mother and Allah tells us how she felt when we were in her womb and how hard it has been even outside the womb for two years!
  • If you are a mother how does this make you feel? Look at the mercy of Allah!

A15. Only do not follow them if they ask you do something against Allah (but still be patient with them)

  • How does this ayah make you feel?
  • We will be accounted for how we treat our parented. How can we improve towards them? Toward Allah?
  • For those whose parents have left, ask yourself how you can do things that will reach them?

A16. Allah can see everything you do

  • What action will you take to ensure your deeds are just as good in private as they are in public?

A17. (I) The salah, right and wrong, patience and steadfastness during trials

  • Ask yourself how is your Salah? How can you improve? How can you keep worldly distractions away? The salah is your meeting place with Allah in this world how can you make it your sanctuary?

A17. (II) Enjoining good and forbidding what is wrong

  • We must have knowledge on what is right and what is wrong, we must apply our knowledge and for us to follow this knowledge so we can also warn others whilst following what we preach.
  • Ask yourself do you practice what you preach how can you improve?

A17. (III) Patience despite whatever befalls you.

  • Know Allah is control and He will not test you beyond your capacity (Surah Al Baqara 286) whatever is occurring is the decree of Allah.
  • What is patience? What are the examples of patience in the Quran how can you apply these? What are you more or less patient in. Yet we must become more patience and wait for justice and reward with Allah.

A18. Arrogance

  • LuQman is known as LuQman the wise, Allah chose this man’s very words not only because of his knowledge but wisdom.
  • So look at the order of his advice, it is in perfect order you cannot pray Salah if you believe in more than one God, you show humility in the prayer, you show humility even with parents who do not share the same religion as you, so you can imagine how bad arrogance is in the sight of Allah.
  • What does say further about arrogance in the Qur’an? What did the messenger of Allah SAW say about arrogance?
  • Think what sort qualities does humility bring and create? What does gratefulness to Allah cause?

A19. Humility in your demeanour

  • Do not be arrogant in the way you walk but neither be weak.
  • Ask yourself what is your manners with others?
  • How does the sound of the donkey braying make you feel? How can you improve your manners?
